Let \(X\) be a set with a measure \(\mu\) and \({\mathcal H}\) be a closed subspace of \(L^2(X,\mu)\). Suppose that \(P\) is the orthogonal projection from \(L^2(X,\mu)\) onto \({\mathcal H}\) and \(H_g\) is the Hankel operator with symbol \(g\in L^\infty(X,\mu)\) defined by \(H_gf=(I-P)(fg)\). Under the assumption that \({\mathcal H}\) is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, the authors study when the condition that \(H_g\) is Hilbert-Schmidt implies that \(H_{\overline{g}}\) is also Hilbert-Schmidt and \(\|H_{\overline{g}}\|_2\leq\text{const}\|H_g\|_2\), where \(\|\cdot\|_2\) is the Hilbert-Schmidt norm, by means of iterated Berezin transforms. Applications to the case of Bergman spaces over strictly pseudoconvex domains in \({\mathbb C}^n\), the Fock space, the pluriharmonic Fock space and spaces of holomorphic functions on a quadric are given.
