In this article, the author investigates the cubic defocusing fourth-order Schrödinger equation, which have been introduced by Karpman and Shagalov to take into account the role of small fourth-order dispersion term in the propagation of intense laser beams in a bulk medium with Kerr nonlinearity, i.e. \[ i \partial_t u+\Delta^2 u+| u| ^2 u=0 \] in arbitrary space dimension \(\mathbb R^n\) for arbitrary initial data. Moreover, he proves that the equation is globally well-posed when \(n\leq 8\) and ill-posed when \(n\geq 9\), with the additional crucial information that scattering holds true when \(5\leq n\leq 8\).
