The authors consider singular integrals with rough variable kernels \(K:\mathbb R^n \times\mathbb R^n \setminus \{0\} \to \mathbb R\) which are positively homogeneous in \(y\) of degree \(-n\) and satisfy the condition \(\int_{S^{n-1}}K(x,y')d\sigma(y')=0\) for a.e. \(x\in \mathbb R^n\). The operators into consideration are defined by \(T_\Phi(f)(x)=p.v. \int_{\mathbb R^n} K(x,y)f(x-\Phi(|y|)y')dy\) and its maximal counterpart is given by \(T^*_\Phi(f)(x)=\sup_{\varepsilon>0} |\int_{\varepsilon<|y|<1/\varepsilon} K(x,y)f(x-\Phi(|y|)y')dy|\) where \(\Phi(t)\) is a non-negative, monotone \(C^1\) function defined in \((0,\infty)\) such that \(\phi(t)=\Phi(t)/t\Phi'(t)\) is bounded. Assuming that \(K(x,y)\) is odd in \(y\) and \[ \int_{S^{n-1}}|K(x,y')|^qd\sigma(y')<\infty \] and that either \(\phi\) is monotone or \(\Phi'(t)\) is monotone or \(t\phi'(t)\) is bounded, the authors show that \(T_\Phi\) and \(T^*_\Phi\) are bounded in \(L^p(\mathbb R^n)\) provided that \(1<p\leq \max\{(n+1)/2,2\}\) and \(q<p'(n-1)/n, (n\geq 2)\). They also study the case where \(K(x,y)\in L^\infty(\mathbb R^n)\times L^q(S^{n-1})\) for some \(q>2(n-1)/n\), getting a different range of boundedness in such a case. Similar results were proved by \textit{L. Tang} and \textit{D. Yang} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 43, No. 4, 488--502 (2002; Zbl 1036.42011)], getting the \(L^2\)-boundedness but it seems that there is a mistake in their proof, because the used a wrong estimate at certain point. The authors use here the method by \textit{M. Christ, J. Duoandikoetxea} and \textit{J. L. Rubio de Francia} [Duke Math. J. 53, 189--209 (1986; Zbl 0656.42010)] to complete the proof in the case of odd kernels and use some extra arguments to get the result for general kernels.
