The authors develop and validate a fluid-structure solver which incorporates the mutual interaction between the incoming shock wave and the structure. This interaction is particularly important in blasts occurring inside enclosures, where multiple shock wave reflections take place and cause the deformation of the structure. A numerical simulation of the blast and structure interaction is an essential part of the solution of the fluid-structure interaction problem, similar to computational aeroelasticity problem. Here the authors present three major models: a flow solver, a structure solver, and a moving mesh algorithm. The article focuses on the prediction of the coupled aeroelastic response of metallic/monolithic composite materials to the blast or shock wave impact. In particular, the objective is to simulate the earlier experiments of the authors [J. Sound Vib. 313, 171--194 (2008)] in which planar shock waves impacted on a configuration of flat plates mounted at the end of a large-size shock tube. The suggested approach includes a compressible finite volume Eulerian solver of second-order accuracy for fluid, and a Lagrangian finite element solver for the structure. A novel implementation of the advancing front moving mesh algorithm is possible due to the introduction of a flexible and efficient quad-edge data structure. An adaptive mesh refinement is introduced into the flow solver for improved accuracy as well.
