This paper is devoted to the study of the Hopf bifurcation of a nonlinear evolutionary system which describes a size-structured model with Ricker type birth function. In the first part of the paper, the authors formulate the system as a non-densely defined Cauchy problem and they prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as the positive equilibrium of this system. The system is then linearized at the positive equilibrium and spectral properties of the linearized equation are studied. The authors are also concerned with the characteristic equation and stability properties. For instance, it is established that the positive equilibrium is asymptotically stable provided that the parameter is large enough. In the last part of the present paper, the authors study the existence of purely imaginary eigenvalues and establish bifurcation diagrams in various cases. Numerical simulations conclude the present paper.
