Let \((X,\|\cdot\|)\) be a Banach space and \(\mathcal T\) a linear topology on \(X\) weaker than the norm topology, \(C\) a bounded closed convex subset of \(X\) whose sequential closure with respect to the topology \(\mathcal T\) is denoted by \(\overline C^{\mathcal T}\). For \(x_0\in X\), the set \(P_C(x_0)= \{x\in C:\| x- x_0\|= d(x_0,C)\}\) is the set of best approximant to \(x_0\) in \(C\). We say that the set \(C\) has Property (P) with respect to a subset \(A\) of \(X\) if, for every \(x\in A\), the set \(P_C(x)\) is a nonempty and norm compact subset of \(C\). A point \(x_0\in X\) is said to be a center for a mapping \(T: C\to X\) if, for each \(x\in C\), \(\| Tx- x_0\|\leq\| x- x_0\|\). In this paper, the authors prove the existence of a fixed point for several classes of mappings (mappings admitting a center, nonexpansive mappings, asymptotically nonexpansive mappings) defined on the closed convex subsets of \(X\) satisfying Property (P). In particular, they derive a sufficient condition, more general than weak star compactness, such that if \(C\) is a bounded closed convex subset of \(\ell\), satisfying this condition, then every nonexpansive mapping \(T: C\to C\) has a fixed point. Concerning the fixed point property in \((\ell_1,\|\cdot\|_1)\), the following conjecture is given: A closed bounded convex subset \(C\) of \(\ell_1\) has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings if and only if \(C\) has Property (P) with respect to \(\overline C^{\sigma(\ell_1,c_0)}\).
