The authors consider an infinite sequence of lens spaces and, for each member of the sequence, they give an explicit construction and description of a non-orientable closed surface which is of maximal Euler characteristic (among all closed non-orientable surfaces in the manifold) and fundamental with respect to Haken's matching equation on the ``natural triangulation'' of the lens space, that is the triangulation of a \((p,q)\)-lens space obtained in the following way: Consider the \((p,q)\)-lens space as the identification space of a double suspension (i.e. a double pyramid) over a \(p\)-gon. Cutting the double pyramid in \(p\) slices around its axis of symmetry one obtains a triangulation consisting of \(p\) tetrahedra.
