In analogy with the fundamental work of \textit{E. Cattani, P. Deligne} and \textit{A. Kaplan} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 8, No. 2, 483--506 (1995; Zbl 0851.14004)] about the algebraicity of the Hodge loci, M. Green and P. Griffiths conjectured a similar behaviour for the zero locus of an admissible normal function (a definition of admissible normal function can be found in: \textit{M. Saito} [J. Algebr. Geom. 5, No. 2, 235--276 (1996; Zbl 0918.14018)]). An unconditional proof of such a conjecture provides evidence in support of the standard conjectures on the existence of filtrations on Chow groups (\textit{M. Green} and \textit{P. Griffiths} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2003, No. 9, 477--510 (2003; Zbl 1049.14002)]). For an admissible normal function over an algebraic curve the conjecture above was previously proved by the authors in: \textit{P. Brosnan} and \textit{G. J. Pearlstein} [Ann. Math. (2) 170, No. 2, 883--897 (2009; Zbl 1184.32004)]. In the paper under review it is proved that the zero locus of an admissible normal function on a smooth complex algebraic variety is algebraic provided that the normal function extends to an admissible normal function on a smooth compactification such that the divisor at infinity is also smooth.
