According to Schmid's nilpotent orbit theorem, the period map of the variation of pure Hodge structure associated to a semistable degeneration over the unit disk in \(\mathbb C\) has at worst logarithmic singularity at the origin. More generally, the period map of any abstract variation of Hodge structure with unipotent monodromy has also at worst logarithmic singularity at the origin. Variations of mixed Hodge structure can be considered if the semistable degeneration is replaced with an arbitrary morphism. As in the pure case such a variation is described by a period map, which has values in a moduli space of graded polarized mixed Hodge structure. In the mixed case, however, the period map may have irregular singularities at zero. In this paper the authors obtain a condition for a variation of mixed Hodge structure to be admissible at a singular point, so that it has a logarithmic singularity there, and describe the monodromy in terms of a special variable grading of the weight filtration.
