The authors introduce a new class of Banach spaces, called slicely countably determined (SCD for short) Banach spaces. A (separable) Banach space \(X\) is called SCD if, for every convex bounded subset \(A\subset X\), there is a sequence of slices \((S_n)\) such that each slice of \(A\) contains one of the \(S_n\). Spaces not containing \(\ell_1\) and spaces with the Radon-Nikodým property are SCD, and so are \(c_0(\ell_1)\) and \(\ell_1(c_0)\). The authors study this class of spaces and the class of associated operators, and they give applications to the Daugavet property and to spaces with numerical index~\(1\). Full proofs of the results announced in this paper can be found in the authors' forthcoming article [``Slicely countably determined Banach spaces'', arXiv:0809.2723v2, to appear in Trans. Am. Math. Soc.].
