Let \(X\) be a \(T_{1}\)-space and let \(\mathcal F (X)\) be the hyperspace of all nonempty closed subsets of \(X\). The set \(\mathcal F (X)\) is endowed with the Vietoris topology. A selection is a continuous function \(f:{\mathcal F}(X)\to X\) such that \(f(A)\in A\) for each \(A\in \mathcal F (X)\). A subset \(S\) of \(X\) is said to be selection strongly-maximal provided that there exists a selection \(f\) such that \(f(T)\in S\) for every \(T\in \mathcal F (X)\) with \(T\cap S\neq \emptyset\). In the paper under review the authors characterize some topological properties of the space \(X\) in terms of the existence of subsets \(S\) which are selection strongly-maximal. Assuming that the set of selections for \(\mathcal F (X)\) is nonempty, the authors prove, among others, the following results. Theorem 1.3. The space \(X\) is first countable with at most one non-isolated point if and only if each \(S\in \mathcal F (X)\) is selection strongly-maximal. Theorem 1.4. The space \(X\) is zero-dimensional if and only if for every open set \(V\subset X\) and a point \(x\in V\) there exists a selection strongly-maximal set \(S\in \mathcal F (X)\), with \(x\in S\subset V\). Theorem 1.5. The space \(X\) is normal and strongly zero-dimensional if and only if for every closed set \(F\subset X\) and its neighbourhood \(V\subset X\) there exists a selection strongly-maximal set \(S\in \mathcal F (X)\), with \(F\subset S\subset V\). Throughout the paper the authors include some interesting questions.
