An interesting problem extensively investigated in real analysis and that however in the non-archimedean context has not been sufficiently studied, is the wavelet theory. The authors of the present paper are some of the main responsible of the development of the \(p\)-adic part this theory in the last decade. One of the most important goals of this paper is to construct an infinite family of compactly supported non-Haar \(p\)-adic wavelet bases in \({\mathcal L}^2(\mathbb{Q}_p)\). These bases are essentially different from the ones previously given in the non-archimedean literature, in the sense that they cannot be constructed in the framework of any known theory (such as the multiresolution analysis approach). Another important goal in the paper is to study the connection between wavelet analysis and spectral analysis of \(p\)-adic pseudo-differential operators. A criterion for multidimensional \(p\)-adic pseudo-differential operators to have multidimensional wavelets as eigenfunctions is obtained. In particular, this implies that the multidimensional wavelets considered by the authors are eigenfunctions of the Taibleson fractional operator. The results given in the paper are used to present the ``variable separation method'' (an analog of the classical Fourier method) for solving \(p\)-adic pseudo-differential equations. This method is finally applied to solve the Cauchy problem for some linear (first order and second order) and semilinear \(p\)-adic evolutionary pseudo-differential equations, which appear in the applications e.g. in the models of interbasin kinetics of macro-molecules. As the authors say, the formulas that they give in the paper do not provide all non-Haar wavelet bases. This leads to them to pose the following problem: construct a \(p\)-adic analog to the multiresolution analysis scheme and describe all compactly supported non-Haar wavelet bases. I think that this is a very interesting problem in \(p\)-adic analysis whose solution will have influence in the applications.
