The paper has two important goals. The first one is to give a complete proof of the theorem which characterizes the nef cone of a quasi-projective toric variety whose fan has convex support. The theorem was stated by Batyrev, but never completely proved. The authors give two different proofs. The second goal is to extend the previous result to the non-simplicial case. Both results use the notion of primitive collection given by Batyrev for the simplicial case and extended by the authors for the non-simplicial one. In the last part of the paper the authors investigate the possibility to eliminate the quasi-projectivity of the toric variety. The conjectures stated are interesting open problems.
