\textit{A. Connes} [Noncommutative geometry. San Diego, CA: Academic Press. (1994; Zbl 0818.46076)] gave a proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem based on tangent groupoids. The paper under review extends the argument to manifolds with boundary. The paper's analytical index can be naturally identified with that defined for conical pseudomanifolds in [\textit{C. Debord, J.-M. Lescure} and \textit{V. Nistor}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 628, 1--35 (2009; Zbl 1169.58005)] and so captures the Fredholm indices of operators fully elliptic in R.Melrose's \(b\)-calculus. There is no apparent simple identification of the topological indices constructed in the two papers. The paper under review generalizes the tangent groupoid to the case of manifolds with boundary. A homomorphism from the tangent groupoid to the groupoid defined by Euclidean space determines a semidirect product of the groupoids. The Connes-Thom isomorphism associated with this semidirect product, followed by a Morita equivalence to the space of orbits, provides the essential step in the topological index used in the paper under review.
