The Banach space \(Z\) is said to strongly generate the Banach space \(X\) if there exists a \(T\in L(Z,X)\) such that, for every weakly compact set \(W\subset X\) and every \(\varepsilon>0\), there is a natural number \(m\) such that \(W\subset mT(B_Z)+\varepsilon B_X\). The first and general part of the paper under review is devoted to renormings of Banach spaces \(X\) which are strongly generated by a superreflexive space \(Z\). It is also proved that, in this case, any compact subset \(K\) of \((X,w)\) is uniformly Eberlein. In the last part of the paper, the authors apply the first part to \(L_1 (\mu)\), where \(\mu\) is a finite measure, to obtain what they call new proofs of slight generalizations of some results of Argyros and Rosenthal. The results are: (i) \(L_1(\mu)\) is strongly generated by a Hilbert space (namely, \(L_2(\mu)\)), (ii) a subspace of \(L_1(\mu)\) which does not contain \(\ell_1\) is superreflexive, and (iii) every compact subset of \((L_1(\mu),w)\) is uniformly Eberlein.
