In another paper the author and \textit{C. Kratzer} [Comment. Math. Helv. 60, 85-106 (1985)] studied the homology type of a simplicial complex \(| L(G)|\) associated to the lattice of all proper subgroups of a finite group G. If G is soluble with a chief series of length n, then \(H=H_{n-2}(| L(G)|)\) is proved to be free of rank m, and \(m=0\) if and only if there exists a normal subgroup of G without complement. Here, the structure of H as G-module, induced by the acting of G on L(G) by conjugation, is described. H is shown to be a permutation representation or, more precisely, H is a direct sum of modules of type \({\mathbb{Z}}(G/T)\), where T is a certain complement of the commutator subgroup.
