In this paper we consider the linear theory of micropolar elasticity and study the energy release rate in elastodynamic crack propagation. The contribution of the couple stresses and microinertia on the energy release rate is investigated. The existence of new terms in addition to those of classical elasticity theory is of interest. To simplify the analysis we restrict our attention to edge cracks in two-dimensional bodies. Throughout this paper we shall employ the standard indicial notation and Cartesian coordinates.
