    The authors study a variational problem connected with a free boundary problem: Given an open bounded connected set \(\Omega \subset {\mathbb{R}}^ n\) with Lipschitz boundary, \(\Gamma_ o\subset \partial \Omega\), a closed \(A\subset {\bar \Omega}\), they find \(u\in M(\Omega,A,\Gamma_ o,0)\), such that \(a(u,f)+\ell (A,f)=0\) for every \(f\in M(\Omega,A,\Gamma_ o,0)\), where a is a bilinear form defined on M(\(\Omega\),\({\bar \Omega}\),\(\Gamma\) \({}_ o,p_ o)\), \(p_ o\in H^{1,2}(\Omega)\), \(M(\Omega,A,\Gamma_ o,p_ o)=\{u\in H^{1,2}(\Omega):u=0\) a.e. in \(\overline{\Omega \setminus A}\cap \Omega,u=p_ o\) in \(\Gamma_ o\}\) and \(\ell\) is a linear functional. First the authors characterize the spaces \(M(\Omega,A,\Gamma_ o,p_ o)\subset H^{1,2}(\Omega)\) ({\S}0), then, given the existence of a solution of the variational problem (Th. 1.2 and its consequences), they obtain in {\S} 1 several regularity properties of this solution.
