The author has considered the problem of stability of a generalized second order fluid flowing down an inclined plane. The critical Reynolds number has been found as a function of dimensionless steady flow velocity, material parameters and the slope of the plane. In this case, for long wave disturbances, Square's theorem is valid (which contradicts \textit{A. S. Gupta}'s finding [J. Fluid Mech. 28, 17-28 (1967)]).
