The authors initiate and develop a theory of analytic uniform spaces which is intended via the fine uniformity to encompass the previously developed theories of analytic sets in compact Hausdorff spaces and in non-separable metric spaces. A parallel and purely topological theory of K-analytic sets in Hausdorff spaces has been developed by \textit{R. W. Hansell}, \textit{J. E. Jayne} and \textit{C. A. Rogers} in Mathematika 30, 189-221 (1983; Zbl 0524.54028), ibid. 31, 28-32 (1984; Zbl 0557.54027), and ibid. 32, 147-190 (1985).
