The simple group of order 6048, i.e. the unitary group \(U_ 3(3)\), gives rise to a Steiner system S of type S(2,4,28) such that \(U_ 3(3)\) is isomorphic to a subgroup of index 2 in Aut(S). The author shows that S is distinct from the Steiner systems S(2,4,28) described by \textit{R. C. Bose} [Ann. Eugen. 9, 353-399 (1939; Zbl 0023.00102)], \textit{M. J. de Resmini} [J. Geom. 16, 148-151 (1981; Zbl 0467.51009)] and \textit{B. Rokowska} [Colloq. Math. 38, 165-167 (1977; Zbl 0377.05005)] and that S may be constructed via the Cayley numbers over GF(2) and \(Aut(S)\cong G_ 2(2)\). The group \(U_ 3(3)\) has four primitive permutation representations of degrees 28, 36, 63 and 63. The permutation representations are described in terms of S. Further the author uses the techniques of his previous paper [J. Algebra 91, 536-566 (1984; Zbl 0553.20006)] to determine the lattice of submodules and the weight distributions of all the submodules for each primitive permutation module over GF(2) of the group \(U_ 3(3)\). In addition it is used the ''Meataxe'' system devised by R. Parker and J. Thackray on the IBM computer in Cambridge, the character tables from (\textit{J. H. Conway} a. o. [''Atlas of Finite Groups'' (1985; Zbl 0568.20001)]), and the F. J. MacWilliams formulae relating the weight enumerators of dual codes (\textit{F. J. MacWilliams}, \textit{N. J. A. Sloane} [''The Theory of Error-Correcting Codes'' (1977; Zbl 0369.94008)]).
