A systematic inverse spectral transform analysis and solution of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ iq_ t+(fq)_{xx}+2fq| q|^ 2+2q\int^{x}_{-\infty}fx| q|^ 2 dx=0 \] is presented. Physically interesting forms of the inhomogeneity function f are discussed.
