Let X be an arbitrary space, \(E_ 1,E_ 2\) two subsets, \(\tau\) : \(X\to X\) a bijective map such that \(\tau (E_ 1)\subset E_ 1\), \(\tau^{- 1}(E_ 2)\subset E_ 2\), and let \(\Lambda\) be the family of all \(\tau\)- invariant kernels \(K: X\times X\to {\mathbb{C}}\). Set \(V=\{all\) functions \(a: X\to {\mathbb{C}}\) of finite support\(\}\), \(V_{\alpha}=\{a\in V:\sup p a\subset E_{\alpha}\}\), \(\alpha =1,2.\) Theorem. If \(K\in \Lambda\) satisfies \[ | \sum K(x,y)a(x)\overline{b(y)}|^ 2\leq [\sum K_ 1(x,y)a(x)\overline{a(y)}][\sum K_ 2(x,y\quad)b(x)\overline{b(y)}] \] for every pair \((a,b)\in V_ 1\times V_ 2\), where \(K_ 1,K_ 2\in \Lambda\), then there exists K'\(\in \Lambda\) such that \[ | \sum K'(x,y)a(x)\overline{b(y)}|^ 2\leq (\sum K_ 1(x,y)a(x)\overline{a(y)})\sum K_ 2(x,y)b\quad (x)\overline{b(y)} \] for every pair (a,b)\(\in V\times V\), and \(K'=K\) on \(E_ 1\times E_ 2.\) The theorem is extended to operator-valued kernels, and its relation to the Nagy-Foias lifting theorem is discussed. In the special case where \(X={\mathbb{Z}}\), \({\mathbb{E}}_ 1={\mathbb{Z}}_+\), \({\mathbb{E}}_ 2={\mathbb{Z}}_-\), \(\tau_ n=n+1\), this result and its applications were largely studied in previous papers of the authors and R. Arocena. After the paper was submitted, extensions to sesquilinear forms in Lax- Phillips structures and to N-parameter groups \(\tau_ t: X\to X\) were obtained. [cf. \textit{R. Arocena} and the authors, Adv. Math., Suppl. Stud. 7 A, 95-128 (1981; Zbl 0494.46051)].
