The surface integral which represents a solid angle subtended by a plane is replaced by a contour integral and a special term to account for the discontinuous behaviour of the solid angle across the plane. As an example of the use of the contour integral, it is evaluated to provide a closed form analytical solution to the potential for a disc-shaped double layer or vortex ring.
