On \({\mathbb{Z}}^+\) or \({\mathbb{R}}^+\), \(\ell^ p(w)\) denotes weighted \(\ell^ p\), where \(1\leq p<\infty\), and where w is a decreasing weight for which \(w(x)^{1/x}\to 0\), as \(x\to \infty\). The problem is to decide whether \(\ell^ p(w)\) is unicellular in the sense that the closed right translation invariant subspaces are totally ordered. In case of \({\mathbb{Z}}^+\), this is the same as unicellularity of the corresponding weighted shift on \(\ell^ p\). In this paper, results and methods of \textit{M. P. Thomas} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 32, 283-296 (1985; Zbl 0551.46033)] and \textit{D. V. Yakubovich} [Zap. Nauchn. Semin. Leningr. Otd. Mat. Inst. Steklova 141, 100-143 (1985; Zbl 0585.47020)] are sharpened and generalized.
