The existence of weak solutions of the initial-boundary value problem for Navier-Stokes equation in the desired generality was first shown by E. Hopf in 1950. Lateron \textit{J. L. Lions} gave a different proof within the framework of modern functional analysis [cf. C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Sér. I 252, 657-659 (1961; Zbl 0097.104)]. The purpose of this note is to point out that Lions' proof can be simplified using a compactness result of \textit{V. Mustonen} and the author [cf. Ark. Mat. 25, 29-40 (1987)].
