The Haidao suanjing (Sea island mathematical manual) written by Liu Hui in 263 A.D. is a mathematical text on surveying based on the right-angled triangle. It is a work of exceptionally high standard. What have survived are nine problems and their methods of solutions; the derivation of the methods and the diagrams are no longer extant. The paper gives a translation of the existing text. It discusses the evolution of this work and its relation with other Chinese mathematical treatises. In the conclusion, there is a brief mention of similar problems in Europe.
