A continuum theory for a distribution of rigid particles in an incompressible fluid is used to determine the speeds of propagation and the rates of growth and decay of acceleration waves and higher order waves in the mixture. The analysis includes the effect of the volume fraction constraint on the propagation of waves in the mixture. It is shown that there is a critical magnitude of the relative velocity between the constituents above which real values of the acceleration wave speeds do not exist.
