The article consists of two at the moment rather disjoint parts. The first part consists of a simple remark that certain results from the moduli space approach to string theory (Polyakov strings) can be combined to give results in arithmetic algebraic geometry. It has of course become clear that there are deep connections between arithmetic algebraic geometry and strings [cf. e.g. \textit{D. J. Smit}, ``Arithmetic and algebraic geometry in string theory'', Preprint CWI (1987); \textit{K. Ueno}, ``Bosonic strings and arithmetic surfaces'', Kyoto Univ. Preprint (1987) and references in these two papers]. However, the author's idea of a complete correspondence between various kinds of unified zeta functions and unified quantum field theories appears very optimistic. The second half of the article deals with meromorphy results for multiple zeta functions, basically Selberg-Smale-Bowen-Ruelle type zeta functions belonging to dynamical systems with multiple times. These elaborate on previous results of the author [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 53, 1- 47 (1986; Zbl 0595.10031)]. The possible connection between these two halves of the paper must be sought in Witten's conjectural BRST noncommutative geometry \(C^*\)-algebra approach to gauge theories [Princeton Univ. preprint (1985)].
