Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the admissibility of unbounded inputs for abstract systems with a semigroup which is isomorphic to a diagonal semigroup on \(\ell_ 2\). The necessity had already been proved by \textit{L. F. Ho} and \textit{D. L. Russell} [SIAM J. Control Optimization 21, 614-640 (1983; Zbl 0512.93044)].
