An abelian group G is called almost decomposable if G decomposes non- trivially into direct sums \(G=\oplus _{i\in \kappa}G_ i\) for all cardinals \(\kappa <| G|\). Moreover G is decomposable, if G decomposes into a direct sum of \(| G|\) non-trivial summands. Answering an open question for any infinite cardinal \(\lambda\) we construct an almost decomposable abelian group of cardinality \(\lambda\) which is not decomposable. The most interesting case is the one for \(\lambda\) of cofinality \(\omega\). The proof is divided into two parts. Firstly, we derive a realization theorem for topological rings as topological endomorphism rings of abelian groups. Observe that the known realization results are not applicable because of their hypothesis \(\lambda =\kappa ^{\aleph _ 0}\), hence \(cf(\lambda)>\omega\). Secondly, we construct a topological ring which reflects the desired decomposition properties.
