We assume that edge detection is the task of measuring and localizing changes of light intensity in the image. As discussed by \textit{V. Torre} and the first author, ``On edge detection'' [AI Memo 768, MIT AI Lab (1984)], edge deh help to further increase the efficiency of the operation.
