The authors deal with the relation between displacements and adequately defined strains for an important class of spatial rods. Such dependence is characterized by certain properties of linear differential systems in Lebesgue \(L^ p\) spaces. Daniel Bernoulli's classical hypothesis of plane cross sections is maintained, but the considered plane sections are no more necessarily normal to the deformed axis of the rod. General theories of equilibrium of conservative elastic rods can be applied to the special case considered here; the elastic energy is thus presented from a frame indifferent point of view, both for help to clarifying the physical meanings and to simplify the mathematical developments.
