    Using Lagrange multipliers, the efficiency of enzymatic networks and the associated evolutionary pressure, (as controlled by reaction rates) is studied. Only equilibrium values are examined and dynamics at these optimal choices are not. Even though nonlinearities (Michaelis-Menten type) are included, possible multiple equilibria are not considered. The analysis is applied to a simplified model of glycolysis. Most of the results involve explaining relative sizes of the rate constants (which determine equilibrium concentrations of the intermediates).
