The concept of root system has been axiomatized and generalized in recent years for possible use in the classification of semisimple Lie algebras of characteristic \(p>0\). In this paper the author investigates the structure of Jacobi sets. A Jacobi set R is a symmetry set [\textit{D. Winter}, J. Algebra 73, 238-247 (1981; Zbl 0489.17010)] in which whenever a, b, c, \(a+b\), \((a+b)+c\in R\), \(a\neq -b\), and either \((a\hat +b)=\hat 0\) and \(\hat c=\hat 0\) or \((a\hat +b)\neq \hat 0\) and \(\hat c\neq \hat 0\), then \(a+c\in R\) or \(b+c\in R\), where \(\hat a\in Hom(Hom(R,{\mathbb{Z}}),{\mathbb{Z}})\) is defined by \(\hat a(f)=f(a)\) for \(a\in R\), \(f\in Hom(R,{\mathbb{Z}})\). He is able to show that, under certain additional conditions, \(R=S\oplus R_ 0\), where \(S\cong \hat R\) is a system of roots in the sense of Bourbaki with 0 added and \(R_ 0=\cup^{k}_{i=1}{\mathbb{Z}}_ p^{n_ i}\) for some k.
