Let T be a closed linear operator with domain and range in a complex Banach space X. T is called normally solvable if it has closed range and T is said to be relatively regular if the range and the null space are complemented. In this paper the author characterizes its relative regularity or its normal solvability in terms of its isolated zeros in the spectrum of the operator. This implies a theorem of \textit{S. R. Caradus} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 47, 409-412 (1975; Zbl 0295.47016)].
