By a tiling of a topological vector space X we mean a covering of X by sets which are the closures of their pairwise-disjoint interiors. If each member of the tiling is a convex set then the tiling is called a convex tiling. For a convex tiling \({\mathfrak T}\) of X let S(\({\mathfrak T})\) denote the set of singular points of \({\mathfrak T}\) (that is, the points at which \({\mathfrak T}\) is not locally finite). For each \(x\in S({\mathfrak T})\) define i(x) as follows: (a) Set \(i(x)=0\) if and only if \(\{\) \(C\in {\mathfrak T}:\) \(x\in C\}\) is not finite. (b) If \(\{\) \(C\in {\mathfrak T}:\) \(x\in C\}\) is finite then: (i) \(i(x)=n\) if and only if n is the smallest integer such that there is an n-dimensional flat \(F\subset X\) for which x is a singular point of the covering \(\{\) \(C\cap F:\) \(C\in {\mathfrak T}\}\) of F. (ii) \(i(x)=\infty\) if and only if there is no integer satisfying the above condition. Let \(x\in S({\mathfrak T})\) where \({\mathfrak T}\) is a convex tiling of X. We prove the following: (1) i(x) is either 0, 1, 2, or \(\infty.\) (2) if X is normable and of the second category in itself then i(x) is either 0, 1, or 2. (3) if \(i(x)=2\) then there is \(y\neq x\) such that ]x,y] consists entirely of singular points of \({\mathfrak T}\) with index 1. (4) if \(i(x)=\infty\) then there is a convex set \(K\subset S({\mathfrak T})\) containing x and a closed subspace Y of finite codimension in X such that K-x is radial in Y at 0. Examples show that the above results do not extend to singular points of either tilings by starshaped sets or coverings by convex sets with nonempty interior.
