Let X be a topological space, C(X) the set of all continuous real-valued functions on X, equipped with the semigroup operation of pointwise multiplication, \(C^*(X)\), \(C_{\infty}(X)\), and \(C_ c(X)\) the subsemigroups of C(X) composed of bounded functions, of functions vanishing at infinity in the case of a locally compact X, and of functions with compact support, respectively. A classical theorem [\textit{A. N. Milgram}, Duke Math. J. 16, 377-383 (1949; Zbl 0033.283)] states that, if \(X_ 1\) and \(X_ 2\) are compact Hausdorff spaces, and \(C(X_ 1)\) and \(C(X_ 2)\) are isomorphic, then \(X_ 1\) and \(X_ 2\) are homeomorphic. The author has proved [Acta Math. Hung. 48, 213-222 (1986; Zbl 0618.54023)] a generalization which replaces semigroup isomorphy by a weaker condition, i.e. u-isomorphy. Now he establishes a similar generalization of the following statements of \textit{T. Shirota} [Osaka Math. J. 4, 121-132 (1952; Zbl 0048.089)]: if \(X_ 1\) and \(X_ 2\) are locally compact Hausdorff spaces, and \(C_ c(X_ 1)\) and \(C_ c(X_ 2)\) (or \(C_{\infty}(X_ 1)\) and \(C_{\infty}(X_ 2))\) are isomorphic, then \(X_ 1\) and \(X_ 2\) are homeomorphic.
