The influence of spatial variation in the carrying capacity and migration rate and of geographical barriers on a neutral diploid one-locus model of geographical variation is studied that includes mutation and random drift. The habitat is one-dimensional, generations are discrete and nonoverlapping. Applying a diffusion approximation a partial differential equation is derived for the probability of identity of two distinct genes. Transition conditions for a geographical barrier and for discontinuities in the carrying capacity and migration rate are derived. Also, the corresponding boundary conditions are presented. Due to the complexity of the model the author had to overcome considerable technical problems.
