The problem of packing 10 congruent circles in a closed unit square, so that their radius is maximal, is not yet solved. The beautiful packing found by R. Milano (1987, not published) is not the densest one: this paper shows that there is a better packing of 10 circles, for which the radius is approximately 0.148180. [This packing has been improved, in 1989, by B. Grünbaum (private communication); the radius of the circles is now approximately 0.148197].
