In contrast to part I [ibid. 5, 175-208 (1989; Zbl 0698.73050)] and part II [see the preceding entry (Zbl 0737.73083)], where triangular flat elements were used for the approximation of the middle surface of shells, in part III doubly curved triangular facets with a \(P_ 2\)-Lagrange interpolation of the geometry are taken as an efficient alternative. The displacements (including the drilling degree of freedom) are approximated according to part II. Convergence of the method for general shells is established without any restrictions concerning the geometry of the middle surface. The existence and uniqueness of the approximate solution are proved too.
