Recently, as part of a program called `` motivic cohomology'', there have been several attempts to construct chain complexes with at least the following properties: (1) Their homology groups receive Chern classes from algebraic \(K\)- theory. --- (2) The complexes should satisfy the axioms formulated by Beilinson in connection with his now famous conjectures. --- (3) The complexes should reflect the ``geometric nature'' of algebraic \(K\)- theory. A huge step in this direction is S. Bloch's complex which computes the higher Chow groups. Then Beilinson, MacPherson and Schechtman took a subcomplex using linear cycles only leading to the so-called Grassmannian homology. However, this article proves that, with respect of the above properties, their complex is too large and replaces it instead by a new version. In this work, the homology of the new complex called affine Grassmannian homology is developed in detail. The central result is that for an infinite field this new homology is isomorphic to the relative group homology of certain general linear groups. It is hoped that this property makes it a suitable tool to study the rank filtration on algebraic \(K\)- theory.
