If \(A\) is a unital Banach algebra, then the subset \(\exp(A)\) of \(A\) consisting of those \(x\in A\) for which \(x=\sum_{n=0}^ \infty (n!)^{-1} y^ n=e^ y\) for some \(y\in A\), is contained in the subset \(A^{-1}=\{x\in A\): \(x^{-1}\in A\}\), invertible elements of \(A\). When \(x=e^ y\), \(x\) is said to have logarithm. The author here is concerned with the problem as to when \(\exp(A)=A^{-1}\). He gives a necessary and sufficient condition for this if \(A\) is commutative and studies special Banach algebras \(\ell_ 1(\alpha)\), \(C(K)\) and \(A\) from this point of view. Further, by using polynomials of convolution type he identifies the two subsets in question for the Wiener algebra.
