The paper is devoted to study of scattering of acoustic waves on both the elastic (''spring-like``) and rigid obstacle using the boundary element methods (BEM). The authors present a detailed derivation of the classical Helmholtz and hypersingular BEM formulations for the sound pressure field. A linear combination of these two formulations results in the Burton-Miller formulation, which admits a unique solution for all wave numbers and so resolves the problem of forbidden frequencies for the Helmholtz formulation and hypersingular one. Galerkin approximation is employed in the numerical implementation of the boundary integral equations, with discussion on the adaptive \(h\)- or \(p\)-refinements and the numerical calculation of singular integrals. Several numerical experiments have been carried out in order to study rates of convergence as well as forbidden frequencies using all three BEM formulations. Finally, the authors investigate a posteriori error estimation as a basis of adaptive \(h\)- or \(p\)-refinements. It is found, that residual type error estimators may be used as a stopping criterion for the adaptive algorithm and that these estimators give realistic estimates of the error.
