The author studies the critical Dirichlet problem \[ - \Delta u = u^p, \;u > 0 \text{ in } \Omega, \quad u = 0 \text{ on } \partial \Omega, \tag{*} \] \(p = (N + 2)/(N - 2)\) in a bounded domain \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N\). It is well known that nontrivial solutions of (*) may not exist, since the corresponding energy functional does not satisfy the Palais-Smale condition. The author constructs a sequence \((u_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon > 0}\) of solutions to the subcritical problem (with \(p\) replaced by \(p- \varepsilon)\) and shows that this sequence concentrates at two points, as \(\varepsilon \to 0\), which are critical points of a certain function which is related to the Green's function of the Laplacian in \(\Omega\).
