Given a contact form \(\alpha\) on a contact manifold \(M^{2n+1}\), let \(\Pi\) be the set of all periodic trajectories of the contact vector field (typically \(\alpha=pdq-Hdt\)). The map \(T: \Pi\to R\), \(\gamma\mapsto T_ \gamma\) is called ``the period spectrum''. Let \(P: \Pi\to\) conjugacy classes of \(\hbox{Sp}(n,R)\) be given by the monodromy matrices. The authors state the following conjecture: Assume that none of the \(P_ \gamma\) has roots of unity in the spectrum. For any deformation \(\alpha_ s\), \(| s| < \varepsilon\) not changing the data \(T\), \(P\), there exist diffeomorphisms \(\psi_ s: M \to M\) such that \(\psi_ 0=\hbox{id}\) and \(\psi^*_ s\alpha_ s=\alpha\). ``This conjecture is true if \(M\) is compact and the system is Anosov ... The main result of this paper is a very weak version of this conjecture for KAM systems: Let \(\gamma \in \Pi\) be an elliptic periodic trajectory ... suppose that \(\gamma\) satisfies an appropriate twist condition. Theorem. Given the hypothesis above, there exist a neighborhood \(U\) of \(\gamma\) and diffeomorphisms \(\psi_ s: (U,Y) \to (M,\gamma_ s)\) the \(\psi_ s\)'s depending smoothly on \(s\) (with \(\psi_ 0\) the identity) such that \(\psi^*_ s\alpha_ s\) is equal to \(\alpha\) plus a term which vanishes to infinite order. This result has two consequences. One is an asymptotic formula for the period spectrum of a ``nearly integrable'' system and the other is a procedure for reconstructing the Birkhoff canonical form of the system from its period spectrum.''.
