The author considers a Dedekind domain \(R\) whose residue fields are finite. He associates, with \textit{R. Gilmer} [J. Number Theory 33, No. 1, 95-100 (1989; Zbl 0695.13015)], to a subset \(S\) of the field of fractions \(K=Q(R)\) the subring \(F(S)\) of the polynomial ring \(K[X]\) of the polynomials \(f\) such that \(f(S)\subset R\). He obtains necessary and sufficient conditions for \(F(A)=F(S)\), where \(A\) is arbitrary and \(S\) is infinite \(R\)-fractional and \(R\)-closed. This result extends a theorem of Gilmer (loc. cit.). The proof is based on techniques described by the author in an earlier paper [J. Reine Angew. Math. 358, 162-178 (1985; Zbl 0568.13003)]. We also remark that the author obtains a characterization of the infinite \(R\)-fractional sets which are \(R\)- closed.
