    A result of \textit{V. F. Gaposhkin} [Theory Probab. Appl. 22, 286-310 (1978; Zbl 0377.60033)] states that for a unitary linear operator \(U\) on \(L^ 2(\mu)\) and a function \(g\) in \(L^ 2(\mu)\), the \(\mu\)-a.e. convergence of the Cesáro averages \(A(n)g\equiv n^{-1} \sum^{n- 1}_{k=0} U^ kg\) as \(n\to\infty\) is equivalent to the \(\mu\)-a.e. convergence of the sequence \(\{[I- E(2\pi- 2^{-n}\pi)]g+ [E(2^{- n}\pi)- E(0)]g\}^ \infty_{n=1}\), where \(E(\cdot)\) is the spectral decomposition of \(U\). The present paper proves an extension of this result to the general setting that \(U\) is a power-bounded operator on a closed subspace \(X\) of \(L^ p(\mu)\) \((1< p< \infty)\) and \(g\in X\). For the Hilbert transform truncates \(H(n)g\equiv \sum^ n_{k=-n} k^{-1} U^ k g\), they also establish a similar result extending \textit{R. Jajte's} result [Ann. Probab. 15,831-835 (1987; Zbl 0634.47008)] for the case \(x= L^ 2(\mu)\). The methods lift the setting from \(X\) to \(\ell^ p\), where classical harmonic analysis and interpolation can be applied to suitable square functions.
