The paper is devoted to extensions of some classical results of S. N. Bernstein concerning characterizations of the derivability of a function in terms of the order of best approximation by polynomials. Let \(E\) be a compact subset of \(R^ N\), satisfying the condition: there exist \(\gamma,r>0\) such that \(d(x,E)\leq n^{-r}\) implies \(| P(x)|\leq\gamma\| P\|_ E\) where \(\| P\|_ E=\sup_ E| P(x)|\), for \(P\in{\mathcal P}_ n(R^ N)\) (the set of polynomials of degree at most \(n\)). If \(f\in C(E)\) and, for a number \(\rho\in(0,r]\), \(d_ E(f,{\mathcal P}_ n(R^ N))\leq n^{-(rk+\rho)}\), then \(f\) admits an extension \(f^*\in C^ k(R^ N)\), whose derivatives of order \(k\) satisfy Lipschitz conditions with exponent \(\rho/r\). Results concerning the existence of \(C^ k\) --- or holomorphic extensions for functions whose best approximation polynomials have zeros outside an open neighbourhood of \(E\) are proved in Section 4 (the uniform norm case) and 6 (the \(L_ p\)-norm case). These are again extensions of a classical results of S. N. Bernstein. The existence of smooth extensions for \(p\)- quasianalytic functions are studied in Section 5.
