The process whereby a human being constructs a cognitive map is constrained by the limitations of short term memory capacity and processing speed as well as constraints imposed by the environment itself. This paper considers the problem of optimizing resource usage when constructing cognitive maps. It provides models for spatial knowledge through representation schemes that might plausibly be used by a human agent. The optimal strategies for acquiring cognitive maps for these models are stated and proved.
